Kosta Boda Design
Monica Backström (Top Left) Monica Backström. Born 1939. Retained by Kosta Boda since 1965, she has a studio at Boda glassworks. Nature is the vast source of inspiration from which Monica Backström takes sustenance for her designs. As a trained silversmith she made her breakthrough with bold experiments to encapsulate metal within the glass melt, and throughout her subsequent career has playfully experimented with the possibilities of the material, both in art glass and utility glass, as well as her own collection of jewelry in glass and silver. Organic, ”growing” forms are a strong feature of Monica Backström’s work, and in recent years she has also begun to explore space in her art glass, including a series of sparkling ”moonstones” with names such as Moonrockers, Super Nova and Cosmos Garden. Olle Brozén (TopCentre) Olle Brozén. Born 1963. Retained by Kosta Boda since 2000, he has a studio at Åfors glassworks. A designer with a mixed background that includes working as a carpenter and as a glassblower in Japan. The Japanese influence is clearly visible in his first sketches for Kosta Boda, a series of stylized patterns inspired by nature. He has also attracted attention with his Round-Trip series: simple, powerful images of vehicles travelling through the city and countryside. Highly simplified patterns and decorations with playful, almost naive subjects, created on a computer, are characteristics of Olle Brozén’s designs. Anna Ehrner (Top Right) Anna Ehrner. Born 1948. Retained by Kosta Boda since 1974, she has a studio at Kosta glassworks. An experimental stylist, her work is distinguished by simple yet powerful shapes and an ability to achieve shimmering displays by using color in subtle ways. Veils of color inside the crystal have become something of a trademark in her art glass. She is also the originator of sales successes such as our Line glasses and Atoll series of bowls Kjell Engman (Centre Left) Kjell Engman. Born 1946. Retained by Kosta Boda since 1978, he has a studio at Boda glassworks. A tirelessly productive visual artist with unbounded imagination and a passion for narrative, who finds free expression through both utility glass and art glass. He gets his inspiration from the most diverse sources, not least from the animal kingdom and the world of music and entertainment. He often works on large installations in which he also combines elements of sound and light. He is frequently commissioned for public works both in Sweden and abroad. He is personally responsible for one fifth of Kosta Boda’s catalogue range. Link to Kjell Engman. Ulrica Hydman Vallien (Centre) Ulrica Hydman-Vallien. Born 1939. Retained by Kosta Boda since 1972. One of Sweden’s best known and most popular artists, whose unmistakable figures can be seen on Ericsson mobile phones and the tails of British Airway’s airplanes, among other places. Ulrica Hydman-Vallien’s most important form of expression is through her glass designs, however, which also played a large part in Kosta Boda’s success in the 1980s and 1990s. She paints her striking and humorous designs straight onto the glass with free and unrestrained energy. Her distinctive female faces, tulips and snakes have decorated big-selling classics such as Open Minds, Tulipa and Caramba. Her work is exhibited on museums and collections all over the world. Restrained, but still warm and personal. This is how Anne Nilsson herself describes her glass. After 18 successful years at the neighboring glassworks of Orrefors, Anne Nilsson has recently moved to Kosta Boda in search of new challenges. She has a string of successful and award-winning series behind her, including several classics. Beauty and function are two sides of the same coin for Anne Nilsson, who has the distinctive ability to capture surprising effects out of the simplest shapes. Having worked mostly with clear glass at Orrefors she is now keen to experiment with painted and colored glass. Gunnel Sahlin (Bottom Left) Gunnel Sahlin. Born 1954. Retained by Kosta Boda since 1986, she has a studio at Åfors glassworks. A generous and forceful modernist whose designs are elegant yet at the same time gentle and fluid. She now works mostly in clear glass, with restrained but effective dashes of color, but has also achieved recognition for glass creations with areas of opacity made up of matte, non-transparent or semi-transparent surfaces. She is very confident in her manipulation of color, shape and volume of glass. She has a background as a textile designer, hints of which can be seen in her elegant designs, which are often inspired by nature. Circles, dots and stripes are among Gunnel Sahlin’s signature patterns. She has been Professor of Ceramics at Stockholm University College of Arts, Crafts and Design since 1999. Ann Wåhlström (Bottom Centre) Ann Wåhlström. Born 1957. Retained by Kosta Boda since 1986, she has a studio at Kosta glassworks. Simplicity and playfulness are two of the key elements of Ann Wåhlström’s design work. Her approach to color and shape are organic and modernist at the same time, and she takes her inspiration from the natural world and from the underwater world, with its swirling shapes and movement. She is a glassblower herself and was discovered by Kosta Boda when her studio glass was exhibited at a gallery in Soho, New York in 1985. Wåhlström’s form of expression is highly individual and easily recognizable, fundamentally reserved and decorative, but frequently spiced with playful details such as spirals, patches of color and applications. Link to Ann Wählström. Göran Wärff (Bottom Right) Göran Wärff. Born 1933. Retained by Kosta Boda since 1964, he has a studio at Kosta glassworks. ”Glass is oxygen – light is energy – glass is light”. So runs the mantra of Göran Wärff, grand old man of Kosta Boda’s designers. Few, if any, have such a deep feeling for the glass melt as Wärff, who has always shown special interest in preserving the traditional skills of the master craftsmen in glassblowing and glass cutting. The play of light within the clear volume of the glass and the endless optical phenomena that occur as the glass diffracts the light are a recurring theme in Wärff’s art and design work. Nature and the play of light in nature are his other main sources of inspiration, beyond the glass itself. In addition to his utility glass and art glass he has also created several large-scale installations. His work is exhibited in museums and collections around the world. |
