  • Moomin lives life fully, and views the world with a feeling of wonderment for such simple pleasures as collecting stones and shells. As gullible as he is enthusiastic, he is also naive and extremely good-natured.
  • Snorkmaiden, Moomin’s lady friend, is a bit of a flirt, wearing her blonde hair in coquettish bangs and sporting a golden ankle bracelet. Romantic fantasies and her vanity often mislead her, but Moomin’s friendship and guidance help her see the truth.
  • Moominpappa is innocent and boyish, but still quite proud of his masculinity. While he is enormously loyal to his family, he is a dreamer partial to dubious individuals and whisky.
  • Moominmamma is highly moral and broadminded – a rare combination. In fact, the members of the family are unaware that she is bringing them up, in part because she knows that mistakes are often the best lessons.
  • Little My stays with the Moomin family. She is so small that she can sit in the family’s milk jug. My gives expression to a most destructive turn of mind. She is totally disrespectful and can be very aggressive but has nevertheless an extremely positive attitude to life. Sometimes she may even demonstrate a kind of careless friendliness – when it suits her. She is the youngest of Mymble’s many children.
  • Snufkin is a philosophic vagabond, always dressed in a slouch-hat and an old coat. In the autumn, he usually leaves the Moominvalley in order to visit other parts of the world. Snufkin is gentle, carefree and independent and does not bother about worldly possessions. He has many admirers, especially among those who are small and shy, and Moomintroll is his best friend.
  • Sniff is adopted by the Moomin family and does not look the least like the others. His character is also completely different – a somewhat ambitious type who is always looking for ways to further his own interests. At times, Sniff feels a bit ashamed for messing things up but then he knows he is always forgiven. After all, he belongs to the family.
  • The Hemulens have misdirected social tendencies, are bad listeners and generally lack all sense of humour. They are often fanatic collectors or authorities with lesser powers. But there are of course many variations.
  • Fillyjonk is the opposite of the Moomin family. Not a single moment of fantasy or joy, only duties. She is an extremely methodical person tied down with principles and has a deep rooted belief in prestige and tradition. But in a catastrophy, Fillyjonk may behave totally irrationally. Deep inside she probably has a wish to live like the Moomin family, without any worries. She is most often accompanied by her three children.
  • Tooticky stands with her feet firmly planted on the ground and her common sense and comments sometimes restore order in the valley. She is always active, very practical and can repair almost anything. Tooticky has the gift of appearing when she is needed and she gives Moominmamma quite a lot of help in keeping things in order.
  • The Hattifatteners can not be seen one by one. They are wandering group-beings who care about nothing else but reaching the horizon. The Hattifatteners can neither speak nor hear, but can see extremely well. They are decent enough in their way, but during thunderstorms they turn electric and should be avoided.
  • Stinky is the valley’s ugly and convincing villain, even if not a successful one, who cheats and steals but never kills. The Moomin family is now and then in contact with him, mostly on account of Sniff, and actually takes a little pride in being good friends with a real villain.
  • The Groke is the terror of everyone, the unmentionable horror. Big, grey and so cold that frost appears on the ground she soundlessly shuffles along. Occasionally she suddenly appears close by, but otherwise she is mostly heard howling from a distance. The Moomin family is sometimes scared of her, but she is also considered to give a little bit of zest to life
